Phu Quoc races to complete power projects ahead of APEC 2027

Hundreds of engineers and workers are racing to complete three major power grid projects on Phu Quoc Island this month, boosting electricity supply as the island prepares to host the APEC 2027 summit.

The projects comprise the 220kV Phu Quoc substation, the 110kV Phu Quoc-Bac Phu Quoc transmission line and the 110kV Phu Quoc-Nam Phu Quoc line. All three are targeted for energisation before August 19, according to Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC).

The new infrastructure is expected to strengthen power supply reliability and provide additional capacity for Phu Quoc's growing economy, tourism industry and infrastructure projects linked to APEC 2027.

Phu Quoc currently receives electricity from two 110kV sources, with the Phu Quoc substation connected via the Ha Tien-Phu Quoc submarine cable and the Nam Phu Quoc substation via the 220kV Kien Binh-Phu Quoc transmission line.

The two sources are not yet interconnected, meaning a disruption to either could affect electricity supply in parts of the island. The new projects are designed to address that vulnerability and improve system reliability under the N-1 contingency standard.

Contractors have deployed additional workers and shifts, with some teams working at night. Drones are also being used to string pilot lines, helping speed up the installation of high-voltage transmission cables.

The 20.7-km, double-circuit 110kV Phu Quoc-Bac Phu Quoc line has 75 tower positions and costs VND 352.97 billion. Scheduled for energisation this month, it will strengthen power supply to northern Phu Quoc and improve grid connectivity across the island.

The VND 934-billion Phu Quoc-Nam Phu Quoc line spans 19.93 km with 79 tower positions, including 17.31 km of overhead lines and 2.62 km of underground cable through the Phu Quoc airport area. A 17.4-km section will carry four circuits, two each at 220kV and 110kV.

Work is also nearing completion at the new 220kV Phu Quoc Substation, which will have two 250-MVA transformers and a 17.9-km, double-circuit 220kV connection line.

Teams at the site are carrying out equipment testing and calibration while contractors work simultaneously on several remaining components. Dao Hoa Binh, deputy general director of EVNSPC, said land clearance for both 110kV transmission lines had been completed.

The northern line is in the final stage of construction, while workers on the southern line are completing cable installation across the remaining sections. Testing and calibration are under way at the 220kV substation.

"Our target is to energise all three projects before August 19, 2026. Further calibration and adjustments will then be carried out to ensure safe and reliable electricity supply ahead of APEC 2027," Binh added.
