The proposed Thanh Thai-Khuc Thua Du cultural and pedestrian zone will be developed under a smart urban model, adding to the capital's existing pedestrian areas around Hoan Kiem Lake, Trinh Cong Son Street, Tran Nhan Tong Street and Ngoc Khanh Lake.
Thanh Thai is currently a busy four-lane urban road next to Cau Giay Park and surrounded by high-rise residential buildings, schools and major transport links.
Its relatively wide pavements and proximity to densely populated neighbourhoods are seen as advantages for developing a new public space for walking, recreation and community activities.
The nearby Khuc Thua Du Street area has already undergone improvements under a "Commerce 4.0" model, with regulated food services, upgraded pavements and more space for pedestrians.
Residents said the new pedestrian zone could provide families and young people with a convenient place for recreation without having to travel into central Hanoi.
However, turning an existing traffic artery into a pedestrian street will require careful planning to minimise disruption to vehicles and nearby residents.
Architect Tran Huy Anh from the Hanoi Architects Association said the success of the project would depend on whether it could encourage residents to use the space regularly rather than relying mainly on commercial events to attract visitors.
He said a pedestrian street should first be accessible and friendly to local residents, helping make walking part of their everyday routine.
The Thanh Thai area benefits from its location among densely populated neighbourhoods, schools, offices and urban developments, but planners will need to address traffic diversions, parking, cultural activities, services, landscaping and technology.
The project is expected to integrate Thanh Thai Street, Cau Giay Park and nearby Khuc Thua Du Street to create a pedestrian-friendly community space.
Its long-term success, experts said, will depend on regular use by local residents, from families and children to young people and the elderly, rather than tourists and major events alone.
