The scheme is being studied for the Hanoi-Haiphong and Cau Gie-Cao Bo expressways in coordination with the Vietnam Roads Administration.
Under the proposal, the far-left lane next to the central median would be reserved exclusively for overtaking.
The Hanoi-Haiphong Expressway has three traffic lanes and one emergency lane in each direction, while the Cau Gie-Cao Bo Expressway has two traffic lanes and one emergency lane.
The proposal was opened for public consultation, with feedback sought from motorists, experts and transport businesses.
Most respondents backed dedicated overtaking lanes, while raising concerns over infrastructure, signage, enforcement and public awareness. Some also questioned their use on expressways with fewer than two traffic lanes.
Authorities said the feedback would be reviewed before the pilot scheme is introduced.
Motorists will be informed of the new rules before implementation to ensure they understand how to use the designated lane.
The pilot is aimed at encouraging proper lane use, improving traffic flow, reducing conflicts between vehicles and preventing accidents.
Traffic police have previously restricted trucks and coaches to the far-left lane only for overtaking on several expressways, including Hanoi-Haiphong, Phap Van-Cau Gie-Ninh Binh and part of Noi Bai-Lao Cai.
