Authorities in Kien Hai Commune, Haiphong City, have safely captured a stray pig-tailed macaque after it repeatedly attacked residents, domestic animals and damaged property in a local neighbourhood.

According to Haiphong City Police, authorities received reports on August 5 that the macaque had appeared in Tan Phong Village, Kien Hai Commune. The animal was described as highly aggressive, repeatedly attacking people and pets while causing damage to property in the residential area.

After receiving the reports, officers from Kien Hai Commune Police quickly responded and safely captured the animal.

Following an inspection, authorities identified it as a pig-tailed macaque, a species listed in Group IIB under Vietnam's regulations governing endangered, precious and rare forest plants and wildlife. The classification is set out in Decree No. 06/2019/ND-CP, as amended by Decree No. 84/2021/ND-CP.

Kien Hai Commune Police said they are advising the commune authorities to coordinate with Haiphong Region II Forest Protection Department to take custody of the macaque and handle the case in accordance with Vietnamese law.
