Police said the case stemmed from an investigation into a slaughterhouse operated by Nguyen Trong Khuong, born in 1994, in My Hao Ward, after local officers identified suspicious activities.
Investigators found that Khuong bought pigs from multiple sources and locations before processing them elsewhere and transporting the meat to a cold store at his home for sorting and storage.
Authorities said he routinely switched off surveillance cameras and screened off the premises while processing pork to avoid detection.
A joint inspection on July 27 involving police, market surveillance officers and veterinary authorities found Khuong processing pork showing signs of spoilage, including discolouration, an unusual odour and suspected disease.
A total of 977.8 kilogrammes of animals and animal products, along with slaughtering and meat-processing equipment, was seized. Laboratory tests later confirmed that seven of nine samples were positive for African swine fever virus (ASFV).
The contaminated pork was destroyed in accordance with veterinary, food safety and environmental regulations.
Khuong showed signs of violating Vietnam's food safety regulations under Article 317 of the Penal Code. The case has been transferred to the police investigation agency for further investigation.
