Dong Thap Province has unveiled an ambitious plan to welcome 50 million visitors during the 2026-2030 period, positioning tourism as a major driver of economic growth.
Under its development strategy, the province will focus on expanding its strengths in ecotourism, orchard tourism, agricultural and rural tourism, cultural tourism, and wellness tourism combining healthcare and medical treatment.
Authorities also plan to develop historical heritage tours linked to traditional education, preserve local cultural values and expand community-based tourism. The strategy aims to diversify tourism products, improve service quality and strengthen Dong Thap's tourism brand at both national and regional levels.
To broaden its tourism appeal, the province will deepen regional cooperation, particularly with other Mekong Delta provinces, the southeast region, Can Tho City and neighbouring localities. It also plans to make better use of high-potential tourism corridors, including the Go Cong coastal area, the Soai Rap area, and the Tien and Hau rivers, while integrating attractions within and beyond the Province into distinctive tourism products.
Between 2026 and 2030, Dong Thap aims to attract 50 million visitors, representing average annual growth of 9 per cent. Around six million are expected to be international visitors, with annual growth projected at 15 per cent. Tourism revenue is forecast to reach VND 35 trillion (approximately USD 1.34 billion), rising by an average of 15 per cent a year.
By 2030, the province expects to have around 700 accommodation establishments offering 15,000 rooms that meet tourism standards. Employment in the sector is projected to reach at least 60,000 workers, including approximately 15,000 direct employees.
According to the Dong Thap Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, visitor arrivals in the first half of this year reached nearly 59 per cent of the annual target, up 16 per cent from the same period in 2025. International arrivals totalled around 350,000, an increase of 5.7 per cent, while tourism revenue was estimated at VND 2.45 trillion (approximately USD 93.8 million), up 7 per cent and exceeding half of the year's target.
In the second quarter of 2026 alone, Dong Thap welcomed around 1.75 million visitors, generating tourism revenue of VND 915 billion (approximately USD 35 million).
