The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has proposed adding two new metro projects to the city's priority transport programme, increasing the total length of metro lines scheduled for completion by 2030 to around 255 kilometres.
The first proposal is Metro Line 2 linking Thu Dau Mot and Ho Chi Minh City. The route would stretch approximately 35 kilometres, including 23 kilometres of elevated track and 12 kilometres underground, with preliminary investment estimated at VND 113 trillion (USD 4.29 billion).
The line is expected to provide a major public transport corridor connecting the northern area of the former Binh Duong Province directly with central Ho Chi Minh City, helping to meet growing inter-regional travel demand. Preparatory procedures are expected to be completed in time for construction to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The second proposal covers an extension of Metro Line 2 from Tham Luong to An Ha and the Northwest Urban Area. The line would be about 30 kilometres long, entirely elevated, with an estimated investment of VND 85 trillion (USD 3.23 billion).
If approved, the additions would increase the number of priority urban railway projects scheduled for completion by 2030 to eight lines, with a combined length of around 255 kilometres and total projected investment of approximately USD 26.87 billion.
Under the city's long-term development strategy extending to 2050 and a 100-year vision, Ho Chi Minh City plans to expand its urban rail network to approximately 1,540 kilometres.
