Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue across northern, central and southern Vietnam until July 31, with some areas likely to experience intense downpours that could trigger flash floods, landslides and urban flooding.
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the northern, central, Central Highlands and southern regions experienced showers and scattered thunderstorms on July 29, with localised heavy rain. Rainfall recorded between 7 am and 8 pm exceeded 100mm in some locations.
During the night of July 29, the southern region and Lam Dong Province are forecast to receive moderate to heavy rain, with isolated areas expected to experience very heavy downpours. Rainfall is forecast at 15mm to 30mm, with some locations exceeding 80mm.
Meanwhile, the northern region and the area stretching from Thanh Hoa Province to Khanh Hoa Province are expected to see scattered showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall generally ranging from 10mm to 20mm and isolated totals above 60mm.
Forecasters warned that rainfall intensity could exceed 80mm within three hours, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying and urban areas, as well as flash floods and landslides in mountainous regions.
Residents were also advised to remain alert for severe weather hazards, including whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts during thunderstorms.
From July 30 to July 31, showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist across northern region and Thanh Hoa Province, with isolated heavy rain.
The region from Nghe An Province to Khanh Hoa Province is forecast to experience scattered showers and thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon and evening, while southern region and Lam Dong Province are likely to see continued moderate to very heavy rainfall in some areas.
The weather agency said rainfall is expected to gradually ease across the affected regions from July 31 onwards.
