Heavy rain on the evening of July 29 caused severe flooding on several roads in Ho Chi Minh City, leaving vehicles stranded and disrupting traffic across parts of the city.
At about 8 pm, floodwater on Ba Trieu Street and Song Hanh Road in Hoc Mon Commune had risen to almost the height of motorcycle wheels, making travel difficult for commuters.
Several motorcycles broke down after becoming submerged, forcing riders to push their vehicles through flooded sections of road. Motorists slowed to minimise waves that could endanger other road users.
Van Thuong, a resident of Hoc Mon Commune, said he encountered heavy rain while travelling home from work. His motorcycle stalled on Song Hanh Street, and he had to push it for nearly 500 metres before finding a repair shop.
According to the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Centre, satellite imagery at around 7 pm showed rapidly developing convective clouds producing heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across multiple wards and communes in the city.
Rainfall was generally between 10mm and 30mm, with some areas recording more than 50mm.
Forecasters said Ho Chi Minh City and southern Vietnam are expected to continue experiencing showers and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening over the coming days, with isolated areas likely to see moderate to heavy rainfall.
Authorities advised residents to avoid heavily flooded roads where possible and to exercise caution when travelling during periods of intense rain.
