The "Let's Get Cracking" hatchery, operated by Six Senses Con Dao, is one of two sea turtle hatcheries on the island. It has recorded an average hatch success rate of 83 per cent over the past three years.
Female green turtles return to the beach each nesting season, typically laying 50-190 eggs per nest before covering them with sand and returning to the sea. The eggs hatch after about 45-60 days.
Staff relocate nests to the hatchery for monitoring and protection, where sand temperatures are managed to help maintain a balanced sex ratio. Turtle sex is determined by incubation temperature rather than genetics.
Hatchlings are released into the sea shortly after sunrise, when lower light levels reduce disorientation.
Conservationists estimate that only one in every 1,000 hatchlings survives to adulthood.
