HCM City to add covered walkways at Metro Line 1 stations

HCM City will install covered walkways linking bus stops to Metro Line 1 stations and upgrade nearby bus shelters to improve public transport connections.

The city's Public Transport Management Centre said the work would cover seven stations along the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien metro line following a review of transport infrastructure within a one-kilometre radius of each station.

Installation is under way at Thao Dien Station, where covered walkways will connect existing bus stops on Quoc Huong and Vo Nguyen Giap streets with the station entrance, while pedestrian routes are also being upgraded.

Similar improvements are planned at Ben Thanh, Van Thanh Park, An Phu, Rach Chiec, Thu Duc and Vietnam National University stations. Works at Van Thanh Park, An Phu, Rach Chiec and Thu Duc are due to be completed by the end of July.

The 2.4-metre-wide covered walkways will feature LED lighting and seating for passengers.

The centre said the project aims to create seamless connections between walking, buses and the metro, making public transport more convenient and encouraging commuters to shift away from private vehicles.

The city also plans to expand the scheme to other metro stations and major transport hubs with high passenger demand.
