The bomb was found buried 1.5 metres underground by Lo Xi Thoong while excavating foundations for a new house in Noong De Village, Nam Can Commune. Thoong immediately alerted local authorities, who sealed off the area.
Military explosive ordnance specialists later identified the device as an M117 general-purpose bomb with its fuze still intact. The bomb measured 42cm in diameter, 1.2 metres in length and weighed approximately 350kg.
The Nam Can Commune Military Command, working with local authorities, swiftly evacuated nearby households and established a security perimeter around the site to protect residents while disposal operations were carried out.
On the morning of July 18, military engineers successfully removed the fuze before a team of more than 10 personnel transported the bomb out of the residential area.
The bomb was taken to a mountainous area in Truong Son Village, Nam Can Commune, where it was safely detonated under controlled conditions without causing any injuries or property damage.
