Natural disasters kill 30 in Vietnam in first half of 2026

Natural disasters killed 30 people, injured 56 and caused an estimated VND 570.7 billion (USD 21.8 million) in damage across Vietnam in the first half of 2026.

Authorities recorded 17 types of natural disasters, including storms, floods, landslides and earthquakes, during the first half of the year.

The disasters destroyed 63 houses, damaged more than 20,000 others and affected nearly 28,600 hectares of farmland, while landslides damaged roads and other infrastructure.

Among the most severe events was a nationwide outbreak of thunderstorms, hail and strong winds in late March that killed four people, injured eight and damaged more than 8,000 houses.

Heavy rain in northeastern Vietnam in May triggered flooding that killed two people, while landslides in Lai Chau Province in June claimed three lives.

Late-June floods in northern Vietnam inundated hundreds of homes and damaged farmland and infrastructure, while Typhoon Maysak caused damage in Quang Ninh Province.

Weather conditions are expected to remain unpredictable in the coming months and urged residents to monitor forecasts and follow disaster prevention guidance.
