Thousands lose water supply after pipeline bursts on Phu Quoc

Nearly 3,000 households in An Thoi on Phu Quoc have been left without running water after a major pipeline burst, with repairs expected to be completed on July 16.

Nearly 3,000 households in An Thoi on Phu Quoc Island have faced disruptions to their domestic water supply following a major pipeline rupture, according to the Phu Quoc Water Supply Branch in An Giang Province.

The utility said it had deployed all available personnel and equipment to repair the damaged pipeline and expected water services to be fully restored on July 16.

The incident occurred at about 10.30 am on July 14, when the water supply system recorded an unusual drop in pressure. Efforts to locate the fault were hampered by widespread flooding across the An Thoi area after heavy rainfall.

At around 10 am on July 15, engineers identified the damaged section of the pipeline inside a technical manhole where a stormwater drainage line intersects with a water supply pipeline on DT975 Road in An Thoi Ward.

The initial investigation found that construction work to install a new stormwater drainage system, aimed at reducing localised flooding, had damaged the underground water pipeline.

Repair work has proved difficult because the manhole remained submerged and was affected by strong water flows from surrounding areas. The utility deployed specialist divers to carry out repairs in muddy underwater conditions, with work continuing into the morning of July 16.

A representative of the Phu Quoc Water Supply Branch said the company expected to complete repairs and restore water supplies to nearly 3,000 households in An Thoi later on July 16.
