Six rare wild animals rescued in central Vietnam

A wildlife rescue centre in central Vietnam has received six rare wild animals from Quang Tri Province for treatment before their release into the wild.

The animals include a northern pig-tailed macaque, two pygmy slow lorises, two crested goshawks and a Sunda pangolin, the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park's Centre for Wildlife Rescue, Conservation and Development said.

The centre received five of the animals on July 4 and July 10 from authorities in Tuyen Phu and Dong Le communes.

The macaque and the two slow lorises had been voluntarily handed over by local residents, while the two young goshawks were found after straying into a residential area.

Initial checks showed that the macaque weighed about 2 kg, was in poor health and had lost its right forelimb. The two slow lorises, weighing about 0.6 kg in total, were also weak and required close monitoring.

The goshawks, with a combined weight of about 0.6 kg, were still young and unable to forage independently in the wild.

The centre also received a 4-kg Sunda pangolin from Khe Sanh commune on July 7 after a local woman found it on a road and alerted authorities. The animal had an injury to its right forelimb.

Sunda pangolins are among the world's most heavily trafficked mammals and face a high risk of extinction.

The animals have been placed in quarantine and are receiving treatment and specialist care. They will be considered for release once they have recovered and regained the skills needed to survive in the wild.

The centre said the voluntary handover of wild animals reflected growing public awareness of biodiversity conservation.
