Hanoi clears most informal markets

Hanoi has dismantled 216 of 231 informal street markets and unlicensed trading areas under a citywide campaign to improve urban order and traffic safety, according to the municipal People's Committee.

All sites classified as the highest priority and all smaller markets have been cleared, while 15 locations remain. Four are scheduled for removal by December 30 this year, with the remaining 11 to be cleared by June 30, 2027.

Authorities have instructed local administrations to maintain regular inspections and deploy personnel at cleared sites to prevent vendors from returning.

District- and commune-level authorities have also been told to relocate traders to vacant stalls in licensed markets or establish temporary managed trading areas, particularly in places lacking formal market infrastructure.

Under its 2026-2030 development plan, Hanoi aims to build 108 new markets and upgrade 118 existing ones, including two regional wholesale markets by 2030.
