Lo Van Ninh, from Lai Chau Province, was critically injured in December 2025 after his fishing rod came into contact with a high-voltage power line while he was fishing near his home.
He was transferred through several hospitals before being admitted to the Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital, where doctors performed multiple operations to save his life. Both legs were amputated below the knee because of extensive tissue damage, followed later by the amputation of his right arm.
Ninh has since undergone a series of reconstructive procedures, including skin grafts and plastic surgery. Deep scar contractures around his face and neck have severely restricted his ability to chew, swallow and speak.
After returning home for the Lunar New Year, his condition worsened as the scars tightened, prompting his family to bring him back to hospital in May for further treatment.
Doctors said Ninh had undergone two reconstructive operations on his face and neck and would require further surgery to improve his ability to eat, speak and carry out daily activities.
He will also need prosthetic limbs and prolonged rehabilitation to regain mobility and support his return to school and community life.
Medical staff said his treatment and rehabilitation would be lengthy and costly, while his family relies mainly on subsistence farming and faces significant financial hardship.
