Illegal dumping pollutes Quang Tri's coastal areas

Illegal dumping is spreading across coastal communes in southern Quang Tri Province, polluting beaches and affecting tourism.

Waste dumped at unauthorised sites along coastal roads in Cua Tung, Ben Hai and Cua Viet has polluted beaches and residential areas with plastic, foam, fishing nets and household rubbish.

At Cua Viet Beach, rubbish has accumulated on roadsides, pavements and near the shoreline during the peak summer tourism season, detracting from the area's appeal.

Local residents said illegal dumping continued despite warning signs, with some people disposing of waste at night or in isolated areas.

Authorities said household waste is collected one to three times a week, but limited equipment, staff shortages and a lack of transfer stations have hampered waste management.

They planned to step up public awareness campaigns, encourage waste sorting at source and propose new temporary waste transfer sites while seeking investment in specialised waste collection vehicles.
