Vietnam proposes five new airports in aviation plan

has proposed adding five airports to the national aviation development plan while dropping plans for a new international airport in Haiphong.

The proposal, submitted to the Ministry of Construction, would add airports at Gia Binh, Tho Chu, Van Phong, Mang Den and Ninh Binh under the 2021-2030 aviation master plan, with a vision to 2050.

Gia Binh Airport is expected to become a major aviation hub for the Hanoi region, sharing traffic with Noi Bai International Airport as demand for air travel continues to grow.

Van Phong and Mang Den have been approved for further study by the government, while Ninh Binh Airport is proposed for development after 2030.

The authority also proposed removing Bien Hoa Airport and plans for a new international airport in Haiphong from the civil aviation network.

It said Bien Hoa's proximity to Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports, together with airspace management, defence, environmental and urban planning considerations, made civilian operations unsuitable. The airport would continue to serve military purposes.

The authority said a new international airport in Haiphong was no longer needed, with Noi Bai, Gia Binh, a planned second airport for the capital region and Cat Bi expected to meet demand. It recommended prioritising investment in the city's seaport, logistics and transport infrastructure

The proposal would increase Vietnam's airport network to 33 airports by 2030, including 17 international airports, rising to 36 airports by 2050, including 19 international gateways.
