Second Hanoi airport site revealed

Hanoi plans a second airport in Ung Hoa and Chuyen My communes, prioritising construction in 2031-2045.

In the Hanoi Capital Master Plan with a 100-year vision, the proposed development of a dual-airport system, including the upgrade of Noi Bai International Airport and the construction of a second airport for the Capital Region, has drawn public attention.

Specifically, Noi Bai International Airport will continue to be upgraded, with an additional 1,500 hectares to the south, aiming for capacity of about 50 million passengers a year.

Meanwhile, the second airport will be located in the far south of Hanoi, in Ung Hoa and Chuyen My communes. The project will cover about 1,500 hectares, be planned to international standards, have projected capacity of 30-50 million passengers a year and be developed under an airport city model.

The plan identifies research and investment for the construction of the second airport as one of the priority infrastructure projects to be implemented in the 2031-2045 period.

The plan also envisages linking the airport with Phu Xuyen urban area under an "airport city" model. The area is expected to become a multimodal transport and services hub, connecting air, rail, waterway and road transport.

Accordingly, the southern airport area will become an important transport hub for the northern region, while also serving as the southern gateway urban area of Hanoi Capital.

The transport network linking the airport is expected to include the Phap Van - Cau Gie and Cho Ben - Yen My expressways, as well as two urban corridors, Ngoc Hoi - Phu Xuyen and the southern economic axis.

Earlier, in March, in a draft explanatory report, Hanoi said it wanted to build the second airport in the areas of Tram Long, Dong Tan, Minh Duc and Kim Duong communes in the former Ung Hoa District, about 40 kilometres from the city centre. The airport would cover about 1,300-1,500 hectares.

The airport has been designated to support Noi Bai, serving domestic and international passenger transport while helping strengthen the capital's connectivity with regions at home and abroad.
