Northern heatwave drives Vietnam's power demand to record high

A severe heatwave across northern Vietnam has pushed national electricity demand to a new record, with peak power consumption reaching 58,456MW on June 24.

According to the National System and Electricity Market Operation Company (NSMO), the national power system recorded a peak load of approximately 58,456MW at 1.50 pm on June 24, nearly 350MW higher than the previous record set on May 26.

Compared with the same period in 2025, peak electricity demand increased by 13.5 per cent.

In northern Vietnam, peak demand reached 29,970MW at the same time, matching the operational record established on May 27 and standing 13.3 per cent higher than a year earlier.

The surge in electricity consumption was driven by exceptionally hot weather across the region, prompting increased use of air conditioning and cooling appliances.

NSMO said the higher load placed significant pressure on parts of the northern grid, with heavy utilisation recorded at several major substations, including the 500kV Hiep Hoa and Thuong Tin facilities, as well as the 220kV Thanh Nghi, Thanh Xuan and Ba Thien substations.

Despite the increased demand, the power system continued to operate safely and voltage levels remained within permitted limits, the company said.

Forecasters expect hot weather to persist on June 25 across northern Vietnam, the north-central region, the area stretching from Thanh Hoa to Danang, and parts of the Central Highlands.

Temperatures are forecast to range between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius, with some locations exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

NSMO warned that electricity demand in the north is likely to continue rising as the heatwave persists.

The company urged households and businesses to use electricity efficiently by switching off unnecessary appliances, setting air conditioners at 26 degrees Celsius or higher, and shifting non-essential power consumption to off-peak hours to ease pressure on the grid and reduce energy costs.
