Hanoi suspends planned power cuts during heatwave peak

Hanoi's electricity utility has suspended all planned power outages from June 23 to June 25 as temperatures are forecast to exceed 39 degrees Celsius in some areas.

Hanoi Power Corporation (EVNHANOI) announced that all scheduled power cuts between June 23 and June 25 would be postponed to ensure a safe and stable electricity supply for residents and key activities across the capital.

The utility said it would implement measures to maintain power supply, including enhanced inspections and monitoring of equipment, deploying additional operational staff and preparing sufficient materials and resources to respond promptly to any incidents.

EVNHANOI also urged residents to use electricity efficiently during the heatwave and avoid operating multiple high-power appliances simultaneously during peak hours from 5.30 pm to 10.30 pm. The utility recommended setting air conditioners at temperatures of 26 degrees Celsius or higher and switching off electrical devices when not in use.

According to weather forecasts, Northern Vietnam, including Hanoi, will continue to experience severe heat from June 23, with temperatures widely ranging between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius and exceeding 39 degrees Celsius in some locations. The prolonged hot weather is expected to drive electricity demand sharply higher.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said the peak of the current heatwave in Northern Vietnam would occur on June 23 and June 24, when daytime temperatures are forecast to reach 37-39 degrees Celsius, with isolated areas recording temperatures above 39 degrees Celsius.

The weather agency said showers and thunderstorms are expected to begin affecting Northern Vietnam on June 25, bringing a gradual decline in temperatures. The heatwave is forecast to end across the region by June 26.

In Central Vietnam, forecasters expect severe and exceptionally severe heat between June 22 and June 25. Areas stretching from Thanh Hoa Province to Hue City are forecast to record daytime highs of 38-40 degrees Celsius, while some western mountainous areas could exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, temperatures along the South Central Coast are expected to reach 36-38 degrees Celsius, with some areas exceeding 38 degrees Celsius.
