Ho Chi Minh City and southern region set for widespread heavy rain

A stronger south-west monsoon and a low-pressure trough over the East Sea will bring heavier rain to Ho Chi Minh City and southern Vietnam in the coming days, raising the risk of localised flooding.

On June 20, the Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Centre said Ho Chi Minh City and provinces and cities across southern Vietnam would generally see sunshine during the day, with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening.

Lowest temperatures will range from 24 to 27 degrees Celsius, with some places below 24 degrees Celsius, while highs will be between 31 and 34 degrees Celsius.

Earlier, on the afternoon of June 19, widespread thunderstorms were recorded across several southern localities, including Ca Mau Province, Vinh Long Province, Dong Thap Province, An Giang Province, Lam Dong Province and Dong Nai City. Rainfall was generally between 4mm and 20mm, with some places recording more than 30mm.

According to the meteorological agency, from June 23 the south-westerly monsoon is expected to strengthen, combining with a low-pressure trough over the East Sea to increase rainfall in Ho Chi Minh City and southern Vietnam in both coverage and intensity.

In particular, around June 26-27, the region may experience a widespread spell of heavy rain, raising the risk of localised flooding in low-lying areas and affecting traffic and daily life.

The meteorological agency advised residents to closely monitor weather forecasts and take precautions against heavy rain, thunderstorms, whirlwinds, lightning and strong gusts in the coming days.
