Hanoi has approved a VND 30.151 trillion (approximately USD 1.16 billion) project to redevelop the West Lake area and upgrade its surrounding scenic transport network.

The project will be implemented under a public private partnership (PPP) model through a build transfer (BT) contract, with a preliminary investment estimate of more than VND 30.151 trillion (approximately USD 1.16 billion).

It is considered one of Hanoi's flagship development projects, designed to transform the West Lake area into a sustainable centre for culture, tourism and the creative economy.

According to city authorities, the project will promote the area's unique landscape, historical, cultural and ecological assets while improving residents' quality of life, supporting socio economic development and strengthening Hanoi's image as the capital of Vietnam. The plan is aligned with the capital's long term master plan and 100-year development vision.

The project covers a planning study area of approximately 567.75 hectares.

Of that total, the existing West Lake water surface, covering about 520.9 hectares, will remain unchanged in order to preserve its natural ecosystem and distinctive landscape.

The remaining 46.85 hectares, including surrounding smaller lakes and adjacent land areas, will be renovated, upgraded and developed through integrated infrastructure investment.

A central component of the project is the improvement, expansion and beautification of approximately 13.5 kilometres of roads encircling West Lake.

Alongside transport infrastructure, the project will include the construction of public squares, lakeside viewing platforms, pedestrian bridges, marinas, parks, flower gardens, underground parking facilities integrated with commercial services and environmental protection works.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026 and be completed by the fourth quarter of 2030.
