40-tonne boulder crashes into home during storm in Cao Bang

A 40-tonne boulder dislodged during an overnight storm crashed into a house in Cao Bang Province early on June 15, trapping two residents and causing significant damage, local authorities said.

The incident occurred at around 1.15 am in Tac Kha Hamlet, Quang Uyen Commune, when a 15-cubic-metre boulder broke loose from a mountainside and smashed into the left side of a wooden house owned by Nong Van Tam.

Two residents, identified as Hoang Thi Le, 65, and Nong Hoa Son, 14, were trapped inside the house following the rockfall.

Emergency responders and local disaster management officials quickly arrived at the scene and rescued the victims, who suffered only minor injuries.

Local authorities later inspected the site, assessed the damage and advised the family to relocate to a safer area. Household belongings were moved to a community hall, where the family is staying temporarily.

The storm also damaged public infrastructure and crops in the area. Strong winds tore off around 50 fibro-cement roofing sheets from a community hall in Yen Lac Hamlet, while about 2.5 hectares of maize were flattened in Da Vy Hamlet.

Total losses from the storm were estimated at more than VND 102 million (USD 3,900), according to local authorities.
