Vietnam plans to expand its airport network to 35 airports by 2050, adding two more facilities than originally outlined in the national aviation master plan.
The Ministry of Construction has submitted a report to the Prime Minister on a comprehensive review and implementation of the national airport system plan for 2021-2030, with a vision extending to 2050.

Under Decision No. 648/QD-TTg, issued on June 7, 2023, Vietnam's airport network was initially planned to include 30 airports by 2030, comprising 14 international airports and 16 domestic airports. By 2050, the network was expected to expand to 33 airports, including 14 international and 19 domestic facilities.
The master plan also identified 12 potential locations for further study and possible inclusion in the airport system in the future.
Following directives from the Politburo, the Government and the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Construction has added Gia Binh International Airport and Tho Chu Airport to the plan through an expedited approval process.
As a result, the total number of airports planned nationwide has increased to 32 by 2030 and 35 by 2050.
The ministry said it is accelerating the preparation and adjustment of detailed airport development plans to meet investment demand while supporting socio-economic development alongside national defence and security requirements.
As part of the country's socio-economic development strategy for 2026-2030, the ministry will continue reviewing potential airport projects while removing those that are no longer needed or considered unfeasible.
For airport projects where feasibility, location, demand or operational conditions remain unclear, authorities plan to place them on a list of potential projects for further research and future updates when sufficient conditions are met.
Requirements related to tourism, national defence, security, search and rescue operations, emergency response and specialised aviation activities will be studied under the model of dedicated airports in accordance with Vietnam's Civil Aviation Law 2025.
The ministry also plans to incorporate future development strategies for general aviation, dedicated airports, aviation logistics centres, pilot training facilities, aircraft maintenance and repair hubs, and transport infrastructure connecting airports across the country.
