Cold air spreads, northern areas may see over 250mm of rain

(Dan Tri) - Due to a late-season cold spell, heavy to very heavy rain is forecast across northern and north-central Vietnam from June 8-9, with over 250mm in places.

On the evening of June 8, the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said a cold air mass had affected most of the northeastern region, bringing moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with some areas seeing very heavy downpours, while temperatures fell by about 7-10 degrees Celsius. Overnight and into the morning, the cold air is expected to spread to other parts of northern Vietnam and the north-central region.

Forecasts for the period from the evening of June 8 to the night of June 9 show heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms in the north-western region and northern parts of Phu Tho Province, with rainfall of 80-160mm and some places receiving more than 250mm. Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces are expected to see moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with rainfall of 50-100mm and isolated areas recording more than 150mm.

The weather agency said the Red River Delta and Haiphong City would likely see moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms from the night of June 8 to the morning of June 9, with rainfall of 20-40mm and some places receiving more than 100mm.

According to the forecast, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected on the afternoon and evening of June 9 in the area from Ha Tinh to Quang Tri, the central highlands and southern Vietnam, with rainfall of 10-30mm and isolated areas seeing more than 70mm.

The agency warned that whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts could occur during thunderstorms. Local authorities have also been urged to guard against flash floods and landslides.

According to the weather agency, on June 9 the area from Quang Tri to Danang and eastern parts of the provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak will continue to experience hot weather, with some places facing severe heat. Highs are forecast at 35-37 degrees Celsius, with some areas above 37 degrees Celsius. The heatwave in these areas is expected to end from June 10.
