Danang issues rip current safety advice for beachgoers

Authorities in Danang City have issued safety guidance to help beachgoers identify and escape rip currents, a major cause of drowning incidents along the city's coastline.

The Son Tra Peninsula and Danang Beaches Management Board has urged local authorities to step up public awareness campaigns on beach safety, particularly during the summer holiday when many young people visit beaches without lifeguard supervision.

The board said lifeguards are on duty daily from 4.30 am to 7 pm during the summer season, which runs from March 15 to September 30, and advised people not to swim outside those hours.

Beachgoers were also urged to follow safety regulations, obey warning signs and swim only in designated areas monitored by lifeguards.

The board highlighted the dangers of rip currents, which are more common during seasonal weather transitions and can pull swimmers away from shore.

Rip currents can be difficult to spot because their surface often appears calm. Warning signs include darker water, smaller waves, floating debris moving offshore and no-swimming zones.

If caught in a rip current, swimmers should remain calm, float or swim with the current, signal for help and move sideways or diagonally out of the flow rather than attempting to swim directly back to shore.
