The target was discussed at a meeting on Thursday chaired by Nguyen Van Hoa, vice chairman of the Can Tho People's Committee, on the implementation of social housing and commercial housing projects.
According to the city's Department of Construction, Can Tho has been tasked with completing 16,900 social housing units by 2030 following the recent administrative restructuring. Of that total, 3,000 units are scheduled for completion in 2026.
As of May, the city had completed more than 3,800 social housing units, equivalent to around 22.5 per cent of its 2030 target.
Can Tho currently has 21 social housing projects that have been launched or are planned. The Department of Construction is reviewing applications for two investor-proposed projects with a combined capacity of more than 3,000 units.
The department said it would work with relevant agencies to resolve legal issues affecting projects located on land reserved within commercial housing and urban development schemes.
Authorities aim to select investors for four social housing projects on public land and begin construction in 2026.
Hoa said the city was on track to meet the government's target of completing 3,000 social housing units next year.
He instructed the Department of Construction to work closely with investors, monitor project progress and address obstacles that could delay implementation.
Investors unwilling to proceed with projects should be replaced, Hoa said.
He also called for investors to be selected by the end of June for four social housing projects already open for investment proposals, allowing construction to begin later this year.
For projects proposed by land-owning investors, Hoa directed relevant departments to expedite land-related procedures to facilitate investor approval.
He urged authorities to accelerate procedures for social housing projects located on the 20 per cent land allocation within commercial housing developments, in line with special policy mechanisms adopted by the National Assembly.
