Speaking on June 5, Nguyen Tan Cuong, chairman of the Hoi An Ward People's Committee in Danang, said local authorities had instructed relevant agencies to verify reports concerning a foreign visitor who was dressed inappropriately while touring Hoi An Ancient Town.
According to footage circulated online on the evening of June 4, the tourist was seen wearing a traditional Vietnamese ao dai without trousers while walking through the UNESCO-listed heritage area.

Noticing the outfit, a local woman approached the visitor and, through a tour guide, politely asked her to dress in a manner more consistent with local customs and cultural expectations.
After the video was shared on social media, many users expressed disapproval of the tourist's attire, arguing that the ao dai is a traditional Vietnamese garment that should be worn respectfully.
Others praised the local woman's calm and courteous response, saying her actions reflected a civilised approach to protecting local cultural values while maintaining respect for visitors.
Cuong said local authorities would attempt to identify the woman involved and consider formally recognising her actions.
The chairman added that authorities have regularly reminded visitors about appropriate dress standards when visiting Hoi An Ancient Town.
Local officials have also stepped up efforts to inform tourists about local customs and cultural norms in order to encourage respectful behaviour and help preserve the city's cultural image.
