Dak Lak authorities on June 4 held a ceremony to receive, commemorate and rebury the remains of 27 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died during different periods of conflict while serving in Cambodia.
The remains were recovered by the Dak Lak Provincial Military Command during the 2025-2026 dry season search mission.
After a handover ceremony in Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia, the convoy transporting the remains crossed into Vietnam through the Bu Prang Border Gate in Lam Dong Province before travelling to Dak Lak Province.
When the convoy reached Hoa Phu Commune, hundreds of local residents, together with representatives of provincial and local authorities, gathered along the roadside holding Vietnamese national flags to pay their respects.
Many war veterans were visibly emotional as they welcomed fallen comrades back to their homeland after decades buried on foreign soil.
Shortly after entering Dak Lak Province, the convoy stopped to allow officials and residents to offer incense and express gratitude to the fallen soldiers before continuing to the Dak Lak Martyrs' Cemetery.
Nguyen Doan Anh, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly, and Luong Nguyen Minh Triet, secretary of the Dak Lak Provincial Party Committee, joined the tribute ceremony.
The convoy then travelled through several major streets in the provincial centre before arriving at the site for the memorial and burial service.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dao My, vice chairman of the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee, recalled the sacrifices made by generations of Vietnamese soldiers.
"Carrying out their sacred duty, millions of young people across the country left their families to fight in defence of the homeland and to fulfil noble international responsibilities in Cambodia," he said.
"The blood of these men and women was shed on the battlefield so that the brotherly nation of Cambodia could live in peace and so that the friendship between our two peoples would endure forever."
Provincial authorities said that over the past 25 years, the remains of 769 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died during various conflicts in Mondulkiri Province have been recovered and reburied at the Dak Lak Martyrs' Cemetery.
A delegation from the Kingdom of Cambodia also attended the ceremony and offered incense in memory of the Vietnamese soldiers.
