The release took place on June 2 in Compartment 218 of the Loc Ninh Protection Forest Management Board, within the Ta Thiet historical forest area.
The tortoise was discovered on May 26 by a resident while travelling along a rural road in Tan Quan Commune. The animal was subsequently handed over to local police.

After examination by forestry and wildlife officials, the tortoise was identified as an adult male yellow-headed tortoise (Indotestudo elongata) weighing 1.1 kilogrammes and in good health.
The species is classified as a rare and protected wild animal under Vietnamese regulations.
Following the completion of relevant procedures, authorities selected a suitable forest habitat and released the tortoise back into the wild.
Officials said the resident's actions and the coordinated response by local agencies contributed to wildlife conservation efforts and the protection of endangered species.
