According to preliminary information, at about 3.30 pm on May 28, cargo vessel SG 7120, carrying goods and 11 crew members, was anchored around 10 nautical miles off the coast of Truong Long Hoa Ward in Vinh Long Province when a gas cylinder exploded.
The explosion triggered a major fire that engulfed the vessel before it sank.
After receiving the alert, the Vinh Long Border Guard deployed personnel and coordinated with two fishing boats to carry out rescue operations.
Rescuers managed to save nine crew members and bring them safely ashore.
Among those rescued, seven suffered injuries and were taken to hospital for emergency treatment. The remaining two crew members are still missing.
Authorities are continuing search and rescue efforts to locate the missing sailors.
