Thai firms seek listings on Ho Chi Minh City stock exchange

Several major Thai companies are preparing to list shares on Vietnam’s stock market, signalling a new phase of investment after decades of acquisitions and expansion in the country.

According to Vietnam’s State Securities Commission (SSC), the development was discussed during an official meeting in Bangkok on May 28 between SSC chairwoman Vu Thi Chan Phuong and Wisit Wisitsora-at, chairman of Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The meeting took place during the official visit of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam to Thailand.

Vietnam has long been a familiar destination for major Thai investors, with a number of Thai companies now actively pursuing procedures to list on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HoSE).

Vu Thi Chan Phuong said Thai businesses had played an increasingly active role in investment activities in Vietnam in recent years and expressed hope that this trend would continue expanding into the stock market sector.

“Strengthening regulatory cooperation and developing new products and markets will contribute to transparent, safe and sustainable capital market growth in each country and across ASEAN,” she said.

Wisit Wisitsora-at reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to maintaining close cooperation with Vietnam, adding that the two agencies would further support businesses and strengthen links between the capital markets of both countries.

“Vietnam is becoming an attractive destination for investment flows in Southeast Asia, with strong development potential and positive growth prospects in the coming years,” he said.

The two sides also agreed to share experience in developing new financial products and markets, including digital asset trading and gold derivatives markets, while enhancing cooperation in market supervision and regulatory capacity.

Thailand was among the earliest regional investors to enter Vietnam. Since the early 1990s, major Thai conglomerates have carried out a series of high profile mergers and acquisitions in the country.

These include SCG’s investments in petrochemical, plastics and packaging companies, Central Group’s acquisition of electronics retailer Nguyen Kim and expansion of the GO! and Big C supermarket chains, as well as ThaiBev’s investment in brewer Sabeco.

According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance, Thai investors had launched 804 projects in Vietnam by the end of April, with total registered capital exceeding USD 15.4 billion, making Thailand the eighth largest foreign investor in the country.
