The programme was organised by Dantri Newspaper in coordination with authorities in Tan Long Commune.
More than VND 170 million (USD 6,700) was donated by readers in Vietnam and abroad to support the construction of the two houses for Le Van Gan, 52, and Nguyen Quoc Ly, 47.

Gan received over VND 80 million after his story about nearly losing a leg in a workplace accident was published by the newspaper, while Ly’s family received more than VND 93 million following an appeal highlighting their deteriorating living conditions.
Both families had been living for years in severely damaged makeshift homes built with timber frames, corrugated iron sheets and nipa palm leaves.
Gan, the main breadwinner of his family, suffered a serious leg injury while cutting trees in 2025 and spent nearly all his savings on medical treatment after facing the risk of amputation.
Meanwhile, Ly has struggled with chronic spinal disease for years, leaving his wife’s factory salary of just over VND 5 million (USD 196) per month as the family’s only stable source of income.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Ly said the new home would give his children a safer and more stable environment for studying.
“If not for the support from readers, I do not know when we would have had the chance to rebuild our house,” he added.
Local authorities said the two households were among the most disadvantaged families in the commune and praised the donations as a meaningful contribution to local social welfare efforts.
Since April 2024, donations from readers have helped Dan Tri newspaper and local authorities begin construction on 278 charity houses for poor and disadvantaged families nationwide, including 239 already completed.
