The catch was made by fisherman Le Van Tinh, 32, and his 10-member crew while fishing in waters between Ha Tinh and Quang Tri provinces early on May 25.

The crew detected a large school of fish using sonar equipment before casting nets and catching more than one tonne of golden pompano, with individual fish weighing between 6kg and 20kg.
The catch was sold to traders after the boat returned to shore later the same day.
Golden pompano, known locally as ca vang duong, is considered one of Vietnam’s four prized fish due to its high commercial value and popularity in seafood cuisine.

Local authorities said large catches of the species had become increasingly rare in recent years, although the same fisherman landed a haul of more than three tonnes in 2023.
Authorities said favourable weather and calm seas in recent days had helped local fishermen secure productive catches.
