Hoi An-Japan cultural festival opens in central Vietnam

The 22nd Hoi An-Japan Cultural Exchange Festival opened in Danang on May 22, celebrating centuries-old cultural ties between Vietnam and Japan through a series of artistic and cultural events.

Held from May 22 to 24 in Hoi An Ancient Town in Hoi An Ward, the annual festival is considered one of the city’s signature cultural diplomacy events.

The event is jointly organised by Danang’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Japanese Consulate General in Danang.

At the opening ceremony, Danang Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Anh Thi said Hoi An had long served as a gateway for economic and cultural exchanges with Japan, which remains one of the city’s leading investors and strategic partners.

She said the festival had evolved beyond a cultural event into a bridge for preserving traditional values and strengthening future cooperation between the two countries.

Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Ito Naoki said the relationship between Japan and Hoi An dated back around 400 years and highlighted the city’s symbolic role in the friendship between the two nations.

The festival features a range of activities, including exhibitions of traditional Japanese dolls, Vietnamese and Japanese folk games, street performances and a reenactment of the historical wedding procession of Princess Ngoc Hoa and Japanese merchant Araki Sotaro.
