Hanoi steps up Ebola monitoring and prevention measures

Hanoi health authorities have ordered tighter monitoring and disease prevention measures amid concerns over the ongoing Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa.

The Hanoi Department of Health said on May 22 that passengers entering or transiting through Noi Bai International Airport, particularly those arriving from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, should be closely monitored for early signs of suspected Ebola infection to ensure prompt isolation if necessary.

Authorities have also instructed relevant agencies to coordinate passenger and flight information collection to support contact tracing and health monitoring for any suspected imported cases entering Hanoi.

According to the World Health Organisation, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda are currently experiencing a complex Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain.

From April 24 to May 19, 2026, more than 500 suspected cases and 130 deaths were reported.

On May 16, the World Health Organisation declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.

To prevent the risk of the disease spreading into Hanoi, the city’s health department has instructed agencies to closely follow developments and update prevention measures in line with the evolving situation.

Hospitals across the capital have been ordered to review and prepare isolation areas, medicines, chemicals and medical supplies needed for diagnosis and treatment in the event of local infections.

Health authorities also called for stronger public communication campaigns to raise awareness of Ebola symptoms and prevention measures while helping residents avoid panic and follow official health guidance.
