Elderly war veteran moved to tears after receiving new home in Lao Cai

An elderly man in his 80s in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai has shared his joy after receiving support from Dantri readers to build a new home.

After Dantri/Dtinews published an article about veteran Hoang Mai Long, who lives in Tran Phu Village, Luc Yen Commune, struggling to raise his two grandchildren in a deteriorating house, readers donated a total of VND 97,052,733 (approximately USD 3,800) to help his family build a new home. The family has used the entire amount for construction costs.

Despite declining health caused by recurring war injuries, Long smiled warmly as he welcomed Dantri reporters to visit the newly completed house.

“Recently, my family received support and care from Dantri and kind-hearted readers from many places. Thanks to that, we have been able to build a spacious and beautiful house. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dantri, its readers and all benefactors,” Long said emotionally.

According to Long, after receiving support from local authorities and Dantri readers, the family discussed plans and borrowed additional money to complete a larger and sturdier house.

“Although we are still in debt, everyone in the family encourages each other to work hard and repay it little by little,” he shared.

The new house is now home to Long and his wife, their two sons and two grandchildren.

“With a more spacious house, the children and grandchildren can live more comfortably. Our lives are much happier than before,” the veteran said.

Leaders of Luc Yen Commune said local authorities have always paid attention to and supported Long’s family. They also expressed appreciation for the contributions from Dantri readers, which helped the family secure a stable and solid home.

Since April 2024, with support from readers nationwide, Dantri has coordinated with local authorities to start construction on 261 charity houses for poor and disadvantaged families across Vietnam. Of these, 239 houses have already been completed and handed over.

In addition to the charity housing project, Dantri has also built 60 classrooms, 32 rural bridges and roads, 100 floating houses for flood prevention, organised 32 free health consultation programmes for more than 6,000 people, donated 7,210 health insurance cards to disadvantaged students, and launched fundraising campaigns to support nearly 6,000 families facing severe hardship.
