The incident occurred at around 3 am when fishing vessel TH-92545-TS was sailing northeast of Bay Sao Islet in the Co To waters amid heavy rain and poor visibility, according to local border guards.
The vessel hit a reef, rupturing the bow and causing water to pour rapidly into the boat, which was at risk of sinking with all eight fishermen on board.

The 18-metre vessel, fitted with a 360-horsepower engine, was captained by Hoang Van Tung, 44, from Quang Xuong, Thanh Hoa Province. The remaining seven crew members were also from the province.
Following a distress call, the Co To Border Guard Station deployed a rescue team and speedboat to the scene despite rough sea conditions. All eight fishermen were safely brought ashore along with essential belongings and fishing equipment.
Additional personnel were later sent to Co To harbour to assist with unloading gear, providing medical support and helping the fishermen recover from the ordeal, authorities said.
The fishermen were reported to be in stable condition.
Border guards are coordinating with relevant agencies to salvage the damaged vessel and arrange for it to be towed to Van Don for repairs.
Authorities urged fishermen to monitor weather forecasts, avoid sailing in poor visibility, and ensure vessels are properly maintained and fully equipped for emergencies.
