Gia Lai removes beachfront hotel to create public space

Authorities in Gia Lai Province have begun demolishing a beachfront hotel in Quy Nhon to restore coastal scenery and create more public space for residents and visitors.

Ngo Tung Son, director of the Gia Lai Land Development Centre, said on May 21 that contractors had started dismantling Binh Duong Hotel on a coastal site in Quy Nhon Nam Ward.

According to Son, demolition work has been underway for several days and is expected to be completed within around 15 days.

Once the work is finished, the land will be handed over to the Quy Nhon Nam Ward People’s Committee for management and future use.

Dang Manh Cuong, secretary of the ward Party Committee, said local authorities had been directed by the province to receive and manage the site.

After the transfer, the ward plans to develop proposals prioritising community benefits, including a coastal park, public recreational space and urban landscape improvements.

The demolition forms part of a broader provincial plan to relocate three major hotels located east of An Duong Vuong Street, including Binh Duong, Hai Au and Hoang Yen hotels, in an effort to restore the coastline’s natural scenery.

Binh Duong Hotel is the first property to be cleared under the programme.

To facilitate the relocation, Gia Lai Province allocated more than VND 43 billion (approximately USD 1.66 million) in compensation and provided over 2,800 square metres of land in Ghenh Rang, Quy Nhon Nam Ward, for construction of a replacement guesthouse.

Regarding Hai Au and Hoang Yen hotels, provincial authorities said relocation would be implemented according to a suitable roadmap.

Hai Au Hotel was built in 2005 and remains in good condition, while Hoang Yen Hotel still holds land lease rights until 2052.

Provincial leaders said both hotels continue to operate effectively and remain well known tourism brands in Quy Nhon, adding that immediate demolition could lead to unnecessary waste.
