The second phase of the project, launched in 2023 with total investment of VND 446 billion (USD 17 million), has been largely completed and is ready to receive fishing boats, local authorities said on May 20.
The facility can accommodate up to 1,000 fishing vessels of up to 600 horsepower operating in the south-central fishing grounds, including the Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands and the DK1 offshore platform area.
The project is expected to help reduce losses caused by storms while improving safety for fishermen and fishing vessels operating offshore.
According to contractors, dredging work covering more than 573,000 cubic metres across an area of over 40 hectares has been completed, alongside the construction of two anchorage zones and installation of 67 mooring and navigation buoys.
The project also includes nearly 830 metres of coastal embankments, transport infrastructure, drainage systems, electricity supply and wastewater treatment facilities.
Authorities said fishing vessels would be able to begin using the shelter during the upcoming rainy and storm season.
