More than VND 310 million (USD 12,000) has been donated by Dantri/DTiNews readers to help a poor family in Phu Tho Province cover medical expenses for a boy recovering from multiple brain surgeries.

Representatives of the newspaper and Viet Duc Hospital on May 18 presented financial support worth more than VND 220 million  to Vu Thi Vui in Van Xuan Commune, whose son Nguyen Giang Nam has undergone several operations for a brain tumour.

The donations were raised after Dantri published an article about the family’s struggle in its charity column.

Additional support from benefactors and charity groups brought the family’s total assistance to more than VND 310 million, including VND 20 million from the Thien Tam Foundation.

Nam remains in recovery after undergoing several major brain surgeries. His condition has improved compared with when he was first admitted to hospital, though scars from the operations remain visible.

Before receiving support, Vui had struggled to care for her son while borrowing money to cover mounting treatment costs.

Vui expressed gratitude to doctors, hospital staff, Dantri readers and benefactors for helping her family through one of the most difficult periods of their lives.

Hospital social workers said the donations had eased the family’s financial burden and given the mother strength to continue supporting her son’s treatment and recovery.
