Fisherman rescues endangered sea turtle caught in net

A fisherman in Vinh Long Province rescued an endangered sea turtle after finding it trapped in a fishing net while harvesting clams along the coast.

Border guards at Giao Long Port Border Station said on May 17 that they had coordinated with forestry officials to release the turtle back into the wild after checking its health condition.

The turtle, identified as a green sea turtle in Vietnamese, weighed more than 2 kilogrammes and was discovered by Le Van Minh, 53, on the morning of May 14 near a clam farming area operated by the Dong Tam Fisheries Cooperative in Thoi Thuan Commune.

Minh said he spotted the turtle entangled in a net while working in the coastal clam fields.

Realising it was a rare and endangered species, he quickly removed the net to free the animal before bringing it to local authorities.

After receiving the turtle, border guards coordinated with local police, fisheries inspectors and forestry officials to examine its condition and monitor its health.

Authorities later confirmed the turtle was healthy enough to be returned to its natural habitat.
