Forecasters said the area from Thanh Hoa to Danang, and the eastern parts of provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak, would experience hot weather during the day, with severe heat in some places, although scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in the late afternoon and at night.
In southern Vietnam, scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast in some places at night, while daytime conditions will be sunny, with heat in some areas. In the southeast, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in the late afternoon, with isolated heavy rain.
Other areas are forecast to see scattered showers and thunderstorms in some places in the late afternoon and at night. In the Central Highlands, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in the late afternoon and evening, with isolated heavy rain.
Further ahead, the meteorological agency said that from the night of May 17 to May 22, northern Vietnam would have scattered showers and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy to very heavy rain, concentrated mainly in the north-west and Viet Bac areas. From May 23, parts of the north are expected to experience hot weather.
The area from Thanh Hoa to Danang, and the eastern parts of provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak, is forecast to have scattered showers and thunderstorms at night from May 17-20, with rainfall concentrated in the afternoon and evening. From around May 21, the region is expected to see localised heat, followed by widespread hot weather.
