Danang tightens controls against SAT1 foot-and-mouth disease risk

Authorities in Danang have ordered urgent measures, including expanded livestock vaccination and tighter transport controls, to prevent the SAT1 strain of foot-and-mouth disease.

In an emergency directive issued on May 13, the city government instructed local authorities to allocate funding for vaccines and ensure vaccination rates among livestock meet required levels.

Areas with low vaccination coverage were told to conduct supplementary inoculations for unvaccinated animals, newly raised livestock and animals whose immunity had expired.

Authorities were also ordered to strengthen disease surveillance at farms and breeding households, promptly report suspected cases and collect samples for testing to prevent outbreaks from spreading.

The city has tightened inspections of animal transport and intensified efforts to combat smuggling of livestock and animal products at border areas, wholesale markets, collection points and slaughterhouses.

Veterinary forces will coordinate with police, border guards and market surveillance units to crack down on illegal transport of animals and animal products.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment was tasked with monitoring virus circulation, assessing the risk of SAT1 strain transmission and coordinating prevention measures across the city.

Authorities also called on residents not to buy or transport livestock of unknown origin and urged farmers to apply biosecurity measures to reduce disease risks.

Local media agencies were instructed to strengthen public awareness campaigns on disease prevention while avoiding unnecessary public panic.
