Vietnam recovers 18 soldiers’ remains in Cambodia

Vietnamese authorities have recovered the remains of 18 volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Cambodia during past wars after more than six months of search operations.

The Military Command of Gia Lai Province said on May 9 that search teams had coordinated with Cambodian authorities to locate and repatriate the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts killed in the Kingdom of Cambodia during different wartime periods.

The latest recovery took place on May 7, when two sets of remains were found in Ia Tung Commune, O Ya Dao District, Ratanakiri Province, Cambodia.

At the site, search teams also discovered personal belongings including military canteens, medical scissors, fountain pens, penicillin bottles, combs, army uniform buttons, Sao Vang balm and Vietnamese coins.

According to the Military Command of Gia Lai Province, search forces recovered 18 sets of remains in Cambodia between November 19, 2025 and May 7, 2026.

Of the total, eight sets of remains were found in Ratanakiri Province, seven in Stung Treng Province and three in Preah Vihear Province.

Search teams said they continued facing difficulties linked to limited information, challenging terrain and harsh weather conditions in Cambodia as efforts to expand the search area continue.
