Vietnamese student receives emergency aid for struggling family

A university in Danang has provided emergency financial support to a student whose visually impaired mother supports the family through street vending.

Representatives of Danang University said on May 8 that student Vo Ngo Nhu Hieu had received VND 10 million (approximately USD 385) in emergency assistance after Dantri/Dtinews published an article about his family’s hardship.

Bui Trung Hiep, a university representative, said the support was approved following a proposal from the Faculty of Business Administration.

According to Hiep, Hieu had not only persevered through difficult circumstances but also achieved impressive academic and personal development results.

“This is clear evidence of his determination, resilience and serious attitude towards studying throughout recent years,” Hiep said.

Speaking to Dantri reporters, Hieu confirmed that the money had been transferred to his account by the University of Economics.

He added that after the article about his family was published, many readers had expressed concern and offered support.

“This is a huge source of comfort and encouragement for my family. I will do my best not to disappoint everyone,” Hieu said.

Hieu, 19, comes from a severely disadvantaged family. His father has died, while his mother, Ngo Thi Thuong, 54, is visually impaired and earns a living by working as a street vendor.

Hieu also cares for his 93-year-old grandmother, who became bedridden after breaking her leg in a fall and now relies entirely on her daughter and grandson for daily care.

Despite the hardship, Hieu has become the family’s greatest source of hope, not only because of his strong academic performance but also as emotional and financial support for his mother and grandmother.
