Nha Trang street vendor fined for tourist rip-off

Authorities in Nha Trang Ward, Khanh Hoa Province, have fined a street vendor more than VND 3.4 million (USD 130) after he allegedly charged a foreign tourist VND 100,000 for a single ice cream.

The 54-year-old vendor from Gia Lai Province was penalised for a series of violations related to street trading and price management.

The offences included selling goods on a prohibited pavement area near Tue Tinh Park on Tran Phu Street, entering a restricted zone and failing to publicly display prices as required by law.

The case drew attention after a Thai tourist shared the incident on social media, describing it as an unpleasant experience during a visit to Nha Trang.

According to the post, she did not ask the price before buying and was initially charged VND 100,000 for one ice cream by the vendor. After an argument, the price was reduced to VND 50,000, though the tourist still considered it excessive for the product offered.

Local authorities said the swift handling of the case was intended not only as a warning against opportunistic business practices, but also as part of efforts to protect visitors and preserve the image of Nha Trang as a friendly and transparent tourist destination.
