Dantri readers help save critically ill Vietnamese teenager

More than VND 720 million (approximately USD 28,300) donated by Dantri readers and benefactors helped a 16-year-old boy in Phu Tho survive life threatening illness.

Dantri/Dtinews Newspaper and Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi on May 6 presented a symbolic donation board worth VND 424,645,156 (approximately USD 16,700) to the family of Pham Ngoc Quang from Ban Nguyen Commune, Phu Tho Province.

The amount was contributed by Dantri readers after the newspaper published Quang’s story.

A Dantri reporter and staff from Bach Mai Hospital's Social Work Department present a symbolic plaque for VND 424.6 million, donated by readers, to Nguyen Thi Tam, Quang's mother.

Pham Ngoc Quang was admitted to hospital in mid February 2026 in critical condition, suffering from coughing up blood, acute respiratory failure, septic shock and severe pneumonia that progressed into acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and multiple organ failure.

Doctors had to place Quang on a ventilator, perform continuous dialysis and apply ECMO, the highest level life support technique used for critically ill patients. Treatment costs were estimated at VND 20-30 million (approximately USD 780-1,170) per day after health insurance coverage.

The family’s financial situation was extremely difficult, making the medical expenses far beyond their means.

Total support from Dantri readers and donors has now exceeded VND 720 million (approximately USD 28,300).

Nguyen Thi Tam, Quang’s mother, said emotionally: “Our family is deeply grateful to the doctors, Dantri readers and everyone who helped my son during the most difficult time. Without them, perhaps my child would not have had another chance.”
